A recent survey conducted by the Research Methods in the Social Sciences class showed that SMWC campus students are not happy with what Sodexo is serving. The survey - sent to all students in the campus program, a little more than 290 students -- inquired about such things as where students eat the majority of their meals and how often they are physically active.

Sodexo, Inc. is an international company that provides food services and facilities management in a variety of environments. Some of these include hospitals, colleges and universities, and military bases. According to Sodexo's website, they "set out each morning to treat every person we encounter with the highest level of respect and service."

For any particular college student, a to-do list for the day might look something like this. Class, work, drive to town for supplies, back to school for homework. Unfortunately, at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College, dinner is served at 5 p.m., and with a schedule like that, it might be hard to make it back to school in time for dinner. In that case, the student is likely to stop at a fast food restaurant while in town before coming back to school to study for the night.

Despite negative opinions about drinking water at SMWC, a recent project about water at SMWC showed that people drink the water and that the water is safe.

The water from the water fountains at SMWC starts out in wells 63 feet underground in an aquifer in the Rosary Hill area, north of SMWC's campus. What is an aquifer? An aquifer is a water bearing layer of earth that is contained between layers of rock. The illustration is of an aquifer similar to the one that supplies the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods campus with its water.

It isn't an uncommon sight to see an SMWC student struggling to carry up a pack of bottled water to her dorm room. Lots of people these days purchase bottled water. Why not? It's convenient, fast, and it tastes good. It's easy to grab a cold bottle of water from the fridge and head to class, right? But here are some things to consider when you choose bottled water as an alternative over drinking tap water.

LE FER HALL Basement - there is a water cooler by the maintenance director's office. Paper cups are provided. In the Oakley Student Center, there's a water fountain in the corner just inside the door by the ice machine. Fountain seems to work fine. Sometimes, though, it shoots high over onto the floor.

Security: What do people really think?

Security is a necessity for any college. It is vital that students feel at-home and know that their belongings and life are safe from harm. The Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College community has approximately 10 security officers. According to a survey of 41 students, 18 feel that security does its job well, with another 8 saying they do their job very well.

New VP of development

Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College President David Behrs, announced the appointment of Serafina I. Spatola as Vice President for Development. Spatola brings 20 years of experience and accomplishments from her work in both the private and non-profit business sectors.

Six from equine team compete at nationals

Six members of the SMWC equestrian teams competed at the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association nationals April 23-26 in Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Four members of the SMWC Western Team competed: Whitney Mahloch placed seventh in the novice division; Morgyn Purdy placed 10th in the novice division; Brittany Gambill placed eighth in the advanced division; and Allison Kralovansky placed fourth in the high point rider competition.

Alumna, author returns to SMWC

Le Fer Hall - pretty on outside, but not upstairs

Saint Mary-of- the-Woods College is well-known for having a beautiful campus. The historic value of the buildings and gorgeous yards make the college a wonderful setting for an education. Le Fer Hall is the dormitory for resident students at SMWC. The exterior of Le Fer appears elegant. However, the interior of the Le Fer is not the equal of its exterior. Beauty seems to be only on the outside. So where does the responsibility fall?

Tour de Wabash Valley Correctional Facility

We were initially thoroughly searched in the entrance lobby of the Wabash Valley Correctional Facility in Carlisle, an all-male, maximum and medium security prison.

Airport security searches, but prison security really searches. We left all our belongings in lockers in the lobby � which was all security measure to curb drug trafficking and weapon trafficking.

Hungry for the Light

I started to become hungry in high school. Not hungry for food, necessarily, but for God.

This hunger was interesting, since God was a regular part of my life. My parents are Catholic, and they brought my sister and me to Mass every Sunday faithfully all throughout my childhood. Still, somehow, I was hungry.

Over the past four years at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College I've come to further appreciate just how unique the SMWC community and culture truly is. While I've always appreciated the difference in SMWC's education, it's the culture that I've come to appreciate and recognize as unique; a culture that encourages change, a culture that is run by student voice.
